The Azaan is the call to prayer, and it reads:

Recited 4 times:
 Allahu Akbar
(God is the greatest)

Recited 2 times:
Ash-hadu alla ilaha illallah
(I bear witness that there is no God except Allah)

Recited 2 times:
Ash-hadu anna Muhammadar Rasulullah
(I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)

Recited 2 times:
Hayya 'ala-salaah
(Make haste towards worship)

Recited 2 times:
Hayya 'alal-falaah
(Come to the true success)

Recited 2 times:
Assalatu khayru min an-nawm
(Prayer is better than sleep)
*** This line is only used for the Fajr prayers

Recited 2 times:
 Allahu Akbar
(God is the greatest)

Recited 1 time:
 La ilaha illallah
(There is no deity except Allah)

The Scolars have stated that to give Azaan for the five daily Salaah & Jummah Salaah, is Sunnat-e-Mu'aqadah and if the Azaan is not given by anyone, the people of the area are sinners for this.

With the exception of the Fardh Namaaz, there is no Azaan for the two Eids, Witr, Janaza Salaah or any Nafl Salaah. The time for Azaan is the same time as that of Salaah & it is not permissible to give any Azaan before the time of that particular Salaah.

Who gives the Azaan?

One who gives the Azaan must be a Sunni who is in a fit state of mind. If Azaan is given without Wudhu, it will be valid although it is not correct to do so.

It is not permissible for a person who is in an impure state, an insane person, an intoxicated person or a Faasiq (open sinner) to call out the Azaan.

It is Makrooh-e-Tahreemi for women to give the Azaan or Iqaamah.

What is Iqaamah?

The word Iqaamah refers to the second call to prayer, given immediately before the Salaah begins.
Generally speaking, the iqama is given more quickly and in a more monotone fashion, as compared to the Azaan.

It differs from the Azaan in only one place – an additional line, "qad q?ma tis-salaat" which means "Stand for prayer" is added after "Hayya 'alal-falaah".

Method of Announcing the Azaan

Azaan must be given standing in the direction of the Qibla, with the index fingers in the ears. The Azaan must be called out with a loud voice, pausing after each Takbeer.

It is desirable to read Durood Sharif before and after the Azaan.

Manners when Hearing the Azaan

When Azaan is read, all talking should stop. Even if a person is reciting the Quran, he should stop and pay attention to the Azaan and this also applies if you are walking through the streets.

If in your area, you are able to hear the Azaan of various Masjids, you should answer the first Azaan that you hear.

Replying to the Words of the Azaan

To reply to the words of Azaan is Mustahab (desirable). The method of doing this, is to repeat after the Mu'azzin the words of Azaan.

When he says "Ash hadu an'na Muhammadur Rasulallah", you should kiss your thumb nails and touch them over your eyes. This should be done whilst saying "Sallal laahu alaika Ya Rasulallah" the first time, and "Qurratu Aini bika Ya Rasulallah" the second time. Then say, "Allahuma Mati'ni Bis Sam'i Wal Basari".
Whoever does this, will be blessed with entering Jannatul Firdous through the Shafaya (intercession) of the Holy Prophet , and this person will never lose his eyesight nor will his eyes ever be sore.

When the Mu'azzin says, "Hayya Alas Salaah" and "Hayya Alal Falah", then you should say, "Laa Howla Wa laa Quw'wata illa Billahil Aliyul Azeem".

In the Azaan of Fajr, when the Mu'azzin says, "As Salaatu Khairum minan Naum", then you should say, "Sadaqtu Wa Barartu".

During the Jummah Khutba, it is not permissible to answer the Azaan, kiss the thumbs or to recite Durood Sharif aloud. It is important to remain silent and listen to the Khutba.

Dua after the Azaan

"Allahuma Rabba Haazi hid-da'wat-it tamati Was Salaatil Qaa'imaati Aati Sayyidina Muhammadinil Wasilata Wal Fadilata Wad Darajatar Rafi'aata Wab Ath-hoo Maqaamam Mahmoodanil Lazi Wa ad'tahu War zukna Shafa'atuhu Yaumal Qiyaamati. Innaka La Tukhli ful Mi'aad."

Meaning: "O Lord of this beautiful Azaan and the Salaah which will follow, give our Master Muhammad Wasila and greatness and an exalted station. And let him reach the Plain of Mahmood of which You have promised him and let us receive his Intercession on the Day of Qiyamah. Without doubt, You never go against Your Promise."

Other Circumstances when Azaan can be given:

With the exception of Namaaz, it is also Mustahab (desirable) to give Azaan in the following situations:

  1. 1. To give Azaan at times of fear brings tranquillity.

    2. During an uncontrollable fire. Inshallah, the fire will be quickly extinguished.

    3. Azaan can be recited in the ears of a person to remove fear and sadness.

    4. At the birth of a child, Azaan should be given in the right ear and Iqaamah in the left ear.

    5. Azaan can be given at the grave-side to give Sukoon (tranquillity) to the deceased.
  2.
  3. 6. Give Azaan to cure somebody who is affected by Jinns or Shaitaan.

    7. During the time of storm.

    8. To ask for rain during drought, or to stop a heavy storm.

    9. When lost in a forest, reciting the Azaan will cause someone to show you your way.

    10. Giving Azaan in your business or residence, will increase Barakah (blessings).
